This morning at about 6:30, Evan came downstairs with his security blanket, crawled into bed between Sonja and me, and said, "Daddy, I don't like the way your breath smells. Can you go brush your teeth?"
Here is a grandfather's collection of clever remarks from Evan:
At the age of three, Evan was already learning the names of trees. When a visiting friend of Eric's tried to prompt him to say "tree", he announced instead, "It's a Japanese Maple." (2004)
Evan once threw a tantrum when his Dad would not let him check out a video they had already seen. Eric picked him up under his arm and carried him out onto the sidewalk, at which point Evan declared: "I can't believe you are doing this to your own son." (2006)
When Linda and I were visiting in Seattle in October 2006, Evan would sometimes awaken us early in the morning. When he showed up at 5:45 a.m., we protested. Unimpressed by our pleas for some additional sleep, he commented: "But Granddad, I'm wide awake and ready for action!"
While visiting in Topeka in April 2007, Evan was firing questions at me in rapid succession. As luck would have it, I knew the answer to each question posed. This made quite an impression on Evan, who observed: "Granddad, you seem to know everything!" I was very impressed that he qualified the compliment.
